Frequently asked questions about solar installation
How much will it cost to have a solar PV system installed?
Prices vary considerably between suppliers — Aurora recommends you get more than one quote.
Are there different system sizes?
The size you need depends on your average electrical use, climate, roof angle, shading problems and many other factors. An expert can help you choose a system that best suits the needs of your home or business.
What are the costs (e.g. meter, connection, etc.) associated with connection to the grid?
You are responsible for the installation costs and also the costs involved in meeting Aurora's technical and safety requirements. A smart meter will be installed that measures the imports and exports from your premises separately, at a cost of $178.99
Will my system work at night?
No. Sunlight must be present for your solar modules to produce power. At night, you will most likely draw power from the grid.
Can I have a solar energy system with Aurora PAY AS YOU GO or Remote Read ERT Meters?
No. Solar energy systems will not work with Aurora PAY AS YOU GO or Remote Read ERT Meters. Instead you will need to revert back to a normal meter. (Please note a meter removal fee will apply.) Also you will need to ensure the meter is in an accessible location as per Aurora's Service and Installations Rules which may require extra work from your electrical contractor.
Will I be credited for the electricity generated, and if so, at what rate will I be credited?
Energy is credited at the same energy rate as the applicable tariff. For example, if you import 2000kWh and export 1000kWh, the 2000kWh is calculated at the tariff energy rate and the 1000kWh is calculated at the same tariff energy rate, you then pay the difference. If you export more than you import, you receive a credit on your account for the difference.
Will my system work on cloudy days?
Yes, although it will produce less electricity. Under a light overcast sky, panels might produce about half as much as under full sun.
What happens during a power outage?
Safety and contractual guidelines and Australian Standards require that the system is to be disconnected and is not permitted to generate electricity when there is a fault, or power outage, on the grid to which your system is connected.
How do I know if a residential solar energy system will work on my home?
Solar electric power works for most homes. A north-facing roof area is optimal, but solar electric panels can be mounted on west or east-facing roofs and still produce better than 90 per cent of the power of a true north roof mounting.
Once my solar panels have been installed — when will I be connected?
If you have any connection queries, please contact our Call Centre on 1300 13 2003.
Does Aurora install my solar system?
No — but we can help you find an Aurora Preferred Renewable Energy Supplier to install your system.
Does Aurora switch my system on after they've installed the digital meter?
No — your contractor will activate your system.
What do I do if my system has been installed but I have not received a Connection Agreement from Aurora?
If you haven't received a Connection Agreement and Offer to Connect letter from Aurora once your solar array has been installed, please contact Aurora Network Connections Team on 1300 13 7008.
Do I have to wait until my panels are installed before I sign and return the Connection Agreement?
No — please sign and return the Connection Agreement as soon as possible.
