Insulation
Insulation prevents heat, light and sound from travelling. A fully insulated house can save up to 40% on winter heating costs. Or to put it another way, an uninsulated home can lose you 40 cents out of every dollar spent on heating, no matter which heating method you use.
Types of insulation
There are two main types of insulation: bulk and reflective. Reflective insulation is usually shiny aluminium foil laminated onto paper or plastic. Bulk insulation is often referred to as ‘batts’ and includes materials such as glass fibre, wool, cellulose fibre, polyester and polystyrene. All products come with an R-value.
The R-value is a rating based on resistance to temperature change. The higher the R-value, the greater the level of insulation.
Eco-Pink Batts
Eco-Pink Batts are bio-soluable. This means they are safe, easy to install, low allergen rated and will not shrink, settle or blow around in your roof cavity.
Ceiling insulation
Most heat loss occurs through the ceiling. Usually when we think of roofing insulation, we think in terms of batts or blankets made from a variety of materials. You can easily install these yourself (just follow the directions on the pack) or employ a tradesperson to install them for you. If you are attempting to do the job yourself, don't forget to wear safety glasses, gloves, and clothing that protects your arms and legs. Aurora Energy recommends a minimum level of R3.5 for ceiling insulation in Tasmania.
Floor insulation
Timber floors can also be easily insulated using batts, blankets or reflective foil. The recommended level of insulation is R1.5 wall insulation. If you happen to be building or renovating, you should also consider insulating your walls. Be aware that the reflective foil that is put into the wall cavities of brick veneer or weatherboard homes nowadays is only a rudimentary form of insulation. The minimum recommended level of wall insulation for Tasmania is R1.5.
