Safety at work

Overhead wires

Farmers, builders, machinery operators and forestry workers should check the location of overhead wires and underground cables before starting work. Also know the exact height of vehicles when the tray, boom or aerial is fully raised or extended. Carrying long poles, such as irrigation pipes upright while under powerlines can also be fatal. If you are unsure of safe operating distances and clearances from powerlines, call Aurora on 13 2004 or Transend on 1300 361 811.

Construction sites

On new building sites it is the electrical contractor's responsibility to ensure the work-site is electrically safe. Stringing multiple leads off the one temporary supply installation is potentially dangerous – consider hiring a generator instead. Always assume all new connections and wiring are live.

Electrical tools

Do not use power tools and/or electrical leads in damp areas or in the rain.

Make sure all your electrical tools are double insulated. Maintain your tools in a safe working order. Do not leave tools lying around and switched on.
