Connect embedded generators

Types of generators

Micro embedded generators

Micro embedded generators are installations up to 10kVA which satisfy the Australian Standard AS4777-2005 “Grid Connection of Energy Systems via Inverters” or as otherwise approved by Aurora*. Aurora approved models may be connected to the distribution network. Information on models of inverter that satisfy these guidelines is available from the Clean Energy Council of Australia (external link).

These guidelines do not cover engine-driven generators.

* Aurora may approve the installation of other systems that are AS 4777 non-compliant provided certification and further technical and safety assessments confirm the system’s compatibility with Aurora’s distribution network.

Small embedded generators

A small embedded generator is a unit greater than 10 kVA (single phase) or 30kVA (three phase) up to 1mW connected to the low voltage (LV) 230/400V distribution network.

Large embedded generators

Large embedded generators are defined for the purpose of the Guide as a generating unit with a name plate rating greater than 1 mW up to 10 MVA connected to the LV or high voltage (HV) distribution system.

As a guide these units include but are not limited to large wind generators hydro combined cycle generating systems up to 10 MVA.
